Kokeshi made in a single copy by the award-winning artist Toa Sekiguchi. Born in Gunma prefecture in 1942, he has won numerous awards, including the "Minister of Education Award" in 1985, "The Minister of International Trade and Industry" and the highly coveted "Prime Minister Award" in 2001.
The name of this kokeshi is Miyakobito which in Japanese literally means "inhabitant of the capital". In this case the artist refers to the ancient capital of Japan, or Kyoto, which maintained this role for over a thousand years from 794 to 1868.
The kokeshi depicts an elegant and noble woman from Kyoto, of marvelous beauty, with long black hair, finely carved. A noble woman and an imperial carriage (gosho guruma) are depicted on her kimono, an image that alludes to various classical Japanese literary scenes. To make the kokeshi even more precious and elegant, the artist used a particular gilding technique which consists in applying thin layers of small pieces of gold leaf.
The wood used for its creation is Keyaki, one of the finest woods. The kokeshi is 28cm tall and 15cm wide.
It comes with a wooden tag with his name in Japanese, the artist's signature and stamp and including the original packaging signed and stamped by the artist.
This is a beautiful collector's item, works like these are usually made for display in major contests and exhibitions in Japan.
